The Quick and Easy Guide to Buying a Home

If you’re looking to purchase a home and don’t know where to start, here is a quick and easy outline to help you get started.

The very first step to buying a home is finding the right Realtor. A great Realtor will explain the entire home-buying process to you, find you the right team (lender, insurance broker, etc.), help you find your perfect home, and most importantly – inspire confidence and security in you during the entire process.

If you are a home buyer, it is completely free to work with a Realtor, so use one.

The next step to buying a home is to get pre-approved. Getting pre-approved means that a lender has verified your credit and financial documentation, and has indicated that you qualify for a mortgage of a specific amount. The reason behind getting pre-approved is for you to know what type of home you can afford to purchase.

If you start looking at homes without being pre-approved first, it’s possible that you’ll be searching for homes outside of your realistic price range – which can waste a lot of your time and effort. So, learn from other people’s mistakes, and talk to a lender to get pre-approved as soon as you possibly can.

Once you get your pre-approval letter from your lender, you can start looking for homes with your Realtor because now you know your price range. Your Realtor should be searching hard for you, but you should also look for homes on your own through your Realtor’s client portal and websites like,,, etc. The more homes you see, the sooner you will discover what you like and don’t like in a home.

You need to communicate with your Realtor to figure out what you absolutely NEED to have in a home, what you SHOULD have in a home, and what you WANT (but don’t need) in a home. Figuring these things out early on will help you find your perfect home as quickly as possible and save you a lot of time and frustration.

This quick guide teaches you just enough to get started in the home-buying process. If you think you are ready to buy a home, then start at Step 1 and find a Realtor to help you out.
